Bottega Veneta started out as a family business in Venice, Italy in 1966. When the company was first launched, its focus luxury leather accessories. The business has grown since those early days and now the company designs both men’s and women’s ready-to-wear line.
Although the company now creates a fabulous ready-to-wear line for women and men, it’s still known as a manufacturer of luxury leather goods. Bottega Veneta is famous for its Intrecciato line of woven leather. The company is currently based in Vicenza in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. In 2001 Bottega Veneta was bought by Gucci.
The company is known for its classic, clean lines. Only the softest leathers are and designs are classic instead of trend driven. Expect to pay £1500 or more for a bag, and be assured that you are getting the best Italian leather and craftsmanship possible. Bags are hand-woven as are belts and shoes.
The current designer of Bottega Veneta is German-born Tomas Maier. He took over the helm in 2001 and helped revive the brand that was flagging at that time. He made the company more modern and reworked Bottega Veneta’s traditional woven leather signature into something more contemporary. Bottega Veneta products tend to only be labelled inside and the metalwork logos are small and subtle.
