Ralph Lauren is a brand with powerful name recognition that was started in 1968. It has become such a powerful brand that it makes everything from fancy and extremely formal tuxedos to more casual tennis uniforms. Although the company currently makes a variety of clothing, this clothing empire began with the famous Polo shirt.
Lauren created the Polo shirt as a way to embody the spirit of American aristocracy. He added the polo shirt to his collection after launching it with a stylish wide tie that became a must-have accessory among the young and stylish of New York.
After the polo shirt came women’s wear, formal wear and then an even larger selection of sports clothes. He started the casual preppy wear. During the 1980s this casual preppy attire briefly lost its appeal as consumers chose slick business suits by Armani and Dolce & Gabbana instead.
During this setback, Ralph Lauren released home lines, fragrances and the Ralph Lauren blue label. The blue label grew to be an empire of classic and elegant eveningwear.
Ralph Lauren followed the Blue label with Purple and Black labels. He balanced his sportier polo brand with more expensive lines of clothing including silk ball gown and six-ply cashmere cardigans.
