Robes are worn for many different occasions throughout the globe and also have many different various names and purposes. Although in the United States we generally think of high quality bath robes when the word robe is used. What you think of when you hear the word ‘robe’ may not be what someone across the world would think of. In Western culture but in many other parts of the world, robes are worn ceremoniously and often by royalty. A few centuries back, sleeve length of the robe used to determine nobility. The longer sleeves were used by high net worth families and the shorter sleeves by the workers. This may have something to do with the different types of robes we wear now.
Depending on what part of the world you live in, a robe may just be a robe. However, that is probably not the case. In the US or the UK a robe can be a dressing gown, bathrobe, robe or cover-up. There are many more names and uses for robes as well globally .
High Quality Bathrobes: This is normally used to describe an open-front fabric that is tied at the waste and used after a bath or shower. The purpose of the bathrobe is to absorb moisture from the body before the person gets fully dressed.
Housecoat: These types of robes when partially dressed or upon getting out of bed in the morning. They’re used for purposes of modesty to avoid being seen nude or in night clothes and in some cases, various stages of dress.
Robe: This is the generic name given for any type of apparel that resembles what we know as robes. They can be any of the otherwise mentioned type of garments but called robes for familiarity and convenience. Robes are used in religious ceremonies, often by the priest or other holy man.
Cover up: This is used to describe the type of robes used when swimming at a pool or a beach. It is basically for wearing publicly. These types of robes are essentially bath robes are both absorbent and comfortable and normally are very light weight .
Kimono: This is a traditional dress that can be seen today in Japan. It can be worn by both men and women although now, most men only wear kimono for weddings or other celebrations. The Kimono often appears elaborate even when it is a simple unlined robe worn for everyday use.
Dressing Gown: These are normally put on when getting out of bed in the morning. They may also be used while in the process of getting dressed.
Gown: Generally, these robes are worn by judges and also for ceremonies such as graduations.
Cotton Robes: Typically worn by women in the US in their homes for lounging or extremely casual purposes.
Robes can be used to describe a garment as simple as one worn after a shower and used only for the most sacred of ceremonies. What robes to one [spin] person in one part of the world may not be the same in a different part of the world .
